Shooting at Howe Park Leaves 4 Shot in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade

Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are probing a gunfire incident that occurred Saturday evening at Howe Park in Sacramento at the time Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispersing an unlawful assembly of an estimated several hundred individuals.

Background

Deputies were first dispatched to Howe Community Park at approximately 6:30 in the evening after receiving reports of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Shortly after, a second call came in regarding an alleged brawl breaking out at Howe Park.

Air support scanned the area from the air but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Nevertheless, it was apparent that a massive group had packed into the park without permission.

Deputies began the process of clearing the park by forming a perimeter and making announcements telling the assembled crowd to leave immediately. Around 15 minutes were allotted for the gathering to break up.

At the height of the dispersal effort that an estimated 20 to 25 shots rang out. Gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies at once began locating gunshot victims.

The Shooting Victims

When the dust settled, four shooting victims were found to have been shot. Those injured — including a female and three males all reportedly in their mid to late twenties — were airlifted or driven to Sacramento area hospitals. Emergency physicians stated that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one had injuries classified as minor. Thankfully, all four were expected to survive.

Sacramento fire crews were called to the scene and helped care for shooting victims before they were taken to the hospital.

Physical Evidence

Most of the gunfire was determined to have taken place adjacent to Cottage Way alongside the local Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators discovered additional shell casings along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were also found in the metal fencing adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. This evidence indicated that a shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot store. The nearby Home Depot was put under lockdown while the scene was active. CSI units alongside detectives stayed at the location through the early morning hours.

Arrests Made

Reports confirmed over police scanner frequencies showed that a Kia had been stopped in Solano County California. Four people were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento law enforcement were traveling to Solano County to pick up those detained for further questioning. Surveillance footage showed that two individuals had fired weapons.
